Educational Program: “The Spirit of Nobility in the Lithuanian Diaspora: Lessons from L. and F. Mockūnas”

2025-01-28

We warmly invite 6th–12th-grade students from Lithuanian schools to participate in the educational program “The Spirit of Nobility in the Lithuanian Diaspora: Lessons from L. and F. Mockūnas.”

The session, along with an introduction to the exhibition dedicated to the memory of Liūtas and Francoise Mockūnas, will take place at the Vytautas Magnus University Representative Office, Žygimantų St. 5A, Vilnius.

Philanthropy, altruism, selfless service, and a willingness to give are values we aim to instill in the minds of young people. The history of the Lithuanian diaspora is rich with examples of these values. We invite students not only to deepen their understanding of the Lithuanian diaspora—of which members of many families in Lithuania were or still are a part—but also to learn about the diaspora’s perspective on support, selfless assistance, and sharing resources.

Participants will learn about Liūtas and Francoise Mockūnas, who lived in Chicago, USA, and returned to Lithuania in 2005. The program will highlight their philanthropic activities both in Chicago and in Lithuania.

  • Liūtas Mockūnas: A critic of Lithuanian literature, publicist, and editor of the monthly magazine Akiračiai. As part of the “Santara-Šviesa” movement, he participated in the “Facing Lithuania” program, delivering books and publications from the diaspora to intellectuals in Soviet-occupied Lithuania.
  • Francoise Marie Puzyna-Mockūnienė: Founder of the L. and F. Mockūnas Scholarship at Vytautas Magnus University, philanthropist, and initiator of the establishment of the Vytautas Magnus University Representative Office in Vilnius.

Duration: 1.5 hours
