This lecture finds the future of film studies in its history. Past techniques clarify the purposes of present ones for teaching film. Returning to past practices expands present methods of movie production. And inventive uses of cinema history, with and beyond AI, renew our enthusiasm for the field. The lecture proves these points using materials from across movie history in creative exercises for the audience to participate–from the silent to sound era and including bad films!
